When buying a residential gate opener, check the battery backup’s capacity
The battery capacity is measured in full cycles. A single cycle consists of one opening and closing action of the driveway gate. The most basic backup battery can provide sufficient power for around 100 cycles. Some advanced electric gate opener backup batteries can deliver power for up to 800 cycles. Possibly even more. Consider your individual needs and the frequency of power outages in your area when making a choice.
Make sure your gate opener and its controls receive regular maintenance
All they need is proper cleaning once a year. If you have a gate chain opener, check it for rust and lubricate it to reduce wear. Rub your gate sensors clean using an appropriate commercial or homemade cleaner. Be careful not to accidentally mess with their alignment. When cleaning the remote controls, don’t forget to take care of the battery compartment too. Take the batteries out first. Then, check the battery contacts for rust and clean them with a mild rust remover, if needed. The entire compartment must be completely dry before you reinsert the batteries.
